Hair Trends Spring 2009.

Inspiration:

Inspired by a spring day in Paris, Catherine Malandrino’s collection reflects the ’40s and ’50s soft silhouettes that were feminine with an underlying edge.

The Look:

Elaborating on the 40s/50s era, the hairstyles evoke “rockabilly” flair by creating volume on the top of the head in a chignon and similar variations of this updo.

The Hair Color Story:

The hair was augmented with customized Wella colored extensions in order to create beautiful chignons that match and complement the natural hair color. Eva Scrivo and her team of Wella Professionals colorists colored over 20 extensions in preparation, along with 30 accentuating pieces to match. In order to create depth, dimension and texture, the Wella Professionals team colored the extensions to show movement and the blending of light and dark tones.

Step-by-Step:

1) Make a tight ponytail high on the top of the head

2) Twist the ponytail tightly into a coil

3) Wrap coiled ponytail first towards the forehead and then to the back, securing with pins into a bun, sitting high on the head

4) Take a Wella highlighted extension, coil, and secure on top of the twisted and already secured ponytail to add height and dimension to the bun

naturally curly waves. While searching through one of my favorite sites I stumbled upon this look. Looks like we are seeing double, yea? Guess again, its actually Carmen Electra and Jessica Simpson both sporting the same dirty blonde-ish “naturally curly waves”

If you like what you see and want to create this look it’s simple. All you need are the following…

• 3/4 or 1 inch curling iron
• Some Frizz control product such as Joice Serum or Chi Silk infusion.

Take the barrel hold it so that the tip is downward. Wrap a small 1 inch section of hair around the barrel, wait 10-20 seconds or till your hair is curled( do not use the clamp). Then wait till it is cooled off. Once it is cool, stretch your hair by tugging at the ringlets(at the ends) till they are loose and “naturally curly.” Lightly mist with hairspray to finish off the look.

Hair Trends the Low Braid. As the heat of summer dies down and cooler temperatures will (hopefully) start coming our way, it’s time to think about some sophisticated, chic hairstyles to take us from one season to the next effortlessly. I’m totally into the look Kate Hudson is rocking at left. Her loose low braid, accented with side-swept bangs, is absolutely gorgeous. (It doesn’t hurt that her chandelier earrings and sparkly gown are to DIE.)

Now, I’ve been fascinated with braided hairstyles for quite some time. (Click here to check out my love of the side braid.) But this is such a unique take on the style that I simply have to focus on it this week! I love that Kate’s hair brings together two different hairstyles in such a unique way. The top of her hair is blown out into sleek, lustrous smoothness, and flows so elegantly into a simple braid that travels down her back. And rather than tying it off with a boldly hued clip or ponytail holder, there’s a simple holder that matches her hair. The end result? Absolute flawless perfection.

First off, your tresses should be sleeker than sleek. Start with a shine-enhancing shampoo — I absolutely love Aveda Shampure Shampoo ($9.50 at aveda.com), which brings out shine like no other shampoo I’ve ever tried.

Next, you’ll want to get the shiniest blowout possible. And what better hairdryer to use than the T3 Bespoke Evolution ($300 at t3micro.com)? Now for the fun part — the braid! You’ll want to gather your hair very loosely and split it into three wide sections. Starting at the nape of your neck, cross one section over the other — not too tightly, or the effect will be lost. The braid should be clean and finished — no pieces sticking out — but at the same time, don’t make it too polished or wound up!

Stop braiding about an inch from the bottom of your locks. Secure the braid with an elastic that matches your hair. TIPS FOR THINNING HAIR. As my friend Lyn tells it she was crouched on the floor of the shower stall, naked save for reading glasses, and counting her hairs that were caught in the drain. Normal hair loss is anywhere from 50 to 100 strands per day and in the United States more than 30 million women experience some accelerated hair loss as they age.
According to Marcy Holmes,a Nurse Practitioner and certified menopause technician, hair loss in women is caused by a multitude of factors from stress, genetics and hormone imbalance to drugs, thyroid system disorder and nutritional deficiencies(especially iron or vitamin A). Hair loss caused by medical conditions or stress is often treatable and reversible. The bad news for the rest of us is that hair loss is a normal part of the aging process and heredity.
Hair is an intrinsic part of our feminine identity and it’s departure, even in women who are not vain, can be traumatic. However there are a multitude of ways to cope with thinning hair aside from wigs, extensions and Rogaine.
1. Go Shorter I’ve been a fan of long hair ever since reading Rapunzel and for years, with just a few unhappy detours, I kept it somewhere between chin and shoulder even when that was no longer my most flattering length. However recently and reluctantly I’ve gone a bit shorter but not so short that I can’t pull it back for ballet.
With thinning hair a short(chin length or above) cut works best but you don’t want to go too short and risk looking scalped. Also very short hair tends to put more focus on your face which may not be what you want to do. Bangs either straight down or side swept can help soften the look while disguising a receding hairline
2. Layer it Short or long layers can cover a multitude of sins, but if the the hairdresser brandishes a razor, run. You want blunt cut layers that will give the illusion of thickness. And remember a good haircut is worth what ever it costs
3. Color it I know that many women are nurturing their gray locks but permanent or semi permanent color thickens the hair shaft and adds body.
4. Forget the daily shampoo. Go easy on the washing. According to WedMD, fine hair gets dirty faster and people with fine textured hair need to shampoo more frequently, even though fine hair breaks more easily. Avoid this catch 22 by using dry shampoo in between washings. The powder will also add a bit of thickness and body.
5. Use a volumizing shampoo, conditioner, and mousse.
6. Avoid putting high heat directly onto hair. Blow drying should not be a problem but flat irons and curling irons can cause damage and breakage. Also avoid volume building products containing paraffin, which is beeswax. It can build up and result in hair breakage
7. Tease - just a little. Don’t think beehive or Dynasty or any of the other big hair horrors. Just gently back comb the underneath hair along the part and then smooth over with the top hair and spray very lightly. This method which I learned from my hairdresser, gives the appearance of volume and a flattering lift.
8. Flip your head upside down, give it a shake, brush it, spray lightly, let it dry for a minute and then flip it back.
9. My instant look thicker trick- Tuck your hair behind your ears and secure with a bobby pin on either side,hidden underneath. Add bold earrings and your good to go.

Hair Trends: Agyness Deyn’s short fringed bob. Some are likening it to the hairstyle of Dr Spock. But we think Agyness Deyn’s new ‘do is more like a modern version of the 1920s Louise Brooks bob. Fringes, platinum blonde shades, and cropped styles have all been big hair trends in 2008, and we’re tipping Agyness’ new look may just make it as a trend for 2009.

What’s so different about Deyn’s new haircut? Aside from merging the 1920s flapper trend with modern rock-chic, it’s shorter - much shorter. The fringe is not eye-sweeping but sharply cropped to the middle of the forehead. And the all-round length is shorter too - meaning those who opted for the popular chin-length bobs and concave pobs in 07-08, will have the option of taking it a step further. Or shorter, as the case may be.

Banish bad hair days! I love the look of my hair blown out and straightened but in reality as a stay at home mom I don’t have much time. I am usually just lucky to get through a shower alone now that my 3yr old has figured out how to pick the bathroom lock. I have used hundreds of different products to make my naturally curly hair look styled and not like I gave up on myself. A lot of products work for a while but over the day my hair gets bigger and bigger or dries out.
