How To Look Chic in a Slow Economy. I don’t know if you’ve been watching the news, but as my job is slightly related to banking, I have been all tuned in over the last few weeks. Seeing the markets taking a turn for the worse is a scary thing…especially when it gets you thinking about the security of your own job. I don’t know if we’re in a recession or not (different people will say different things), but I do know that the economy is slowing down and money is tightening up. I’m working harder than ever to pay off my credit card, and I’m taking serious cuts in my spending habits. I highly encourage you guys to do the same. Pay off your debts and start saving. There may be hard times ahead! It’s better to be safe than sorry. I’m no financial planner or anything, but I’ve been thinking a lot about my spending habits and my lack of savings, and I just don’t want you guys making the same mistakes (i.e. spending all your money on clothes) that I have.

Looking Chic in a Slow Economy
To work with my even tighter budget, I’ve decided to pick a couple items a season to make my “it” items. Instead of buying gobs and gobs of clothes, I’m going to try my best to buy one or two “it” items a season and use my existing clothes to finish out the look. Now, “What exactly is an “it” item?” you may ask. I think an “it” item is a different type of thing to every person. “It” is something you really want right now, something that is trendy right now, something that you’ve been wanting for a long time. To me, an “it” item is something kinda trendy or “of the moment” that will compliment my wardrobe or replace something that needs to be replaced. “It” is something that I intend to wear quite often for a given season (or longer) that will enhance my wardrobe but fit well with what I already have. I don’t want to get an “it” item that will require new shoes or a new top b/c that will kinda null the point of trying to only get a couple items to begin with.

I got these jeans almost two weeks ago, with my October budget money, and I’ve already been able to wear them several times. I’ve been super-pleased with my purchase. They are very versatile, comfortable, and chic.

But, back to the money-talk…my dear fellow shopaholic-friends, please do think about your finances. I obviously don’t know your financial situation, but if you’re a shopaholic like me, it will be hard to slow down your spending habits. To me, slowing down on shopping can be like going on a new diet. Whenever I’ve tried to stop eating bad food cold-turkey, it’s never worked. Whenever I’ve tried to stop shopping cold-turkey, it’s never worked. I’ve been weaning myself down from shopping over the last few months and I think I’ve been doing pretty good! I’ve been returning to my old habits of shopping the sale racks and looking for good deals, and I’ve found some great steals! I paid off one credit card and now have one more, plus the iMac to go. The only other thing I’d like to do now is set aside some money for a rainy day.

PRETTY IN PINK

If you’re a fan of bright, red lipstick, think about going a little different today. Instead, try a fuschia lipstick, which is more fun and playful anyways. Start by lining your lips with a magenta colored lip pencil to prevent color bleeding. Fuschia is a color that is not only versatile, but works great on girls with dark or fair hair. To balance out this bold look, swipe on a lengthening mascara and voila you have pretty in pink lips and to-die-for lashes.

THE NEW SMOKEY EYE

If you’re a fan of the smokey eye, but don’t necessarily have time to do it in the morning, here’s the new and improved smokey eye on the rush! Bold, black colors can turn out horrible on bad days, so you have to step it down a notch and incorporate easier-to-wear colors, such as gray hues. Start by filling in the upper lashes with a gray pencil and drag out the line at the outer corners of the eye to create a slightly winged shape. Smudge a bit of gray shadow along the lower lash line and you don’t even need mascara to boot. You can call this look the “during the day smokey eye”.

VIOLETS

Pretty purples and violets are the it colors this season, so it’s no wonder that they’re ending up on our eyes as well. To warm up the purple shadow, blend some peach blush with a hint of shimmer high on the cheekbone and up to the lids. If you put on too much, you can end up looking dated. A touch of iridescence gives skin a youthful luminosity. Instead of going for the traditional nude lip, try a salmon color for more excitement.

GOLDEN GIRL

This is another version of the smokey eye and it’s perfect for a rushed night out or whatever you’re in the mood for. Start by dotting black pencil between the lashes and line the lower inner rims. Then blend the liner with a slick black gloss for a super sexy effect. For the final touch, blend a dab of lip balm with a gold shadow and gild the inner eye corners. This will open up your eyes a thousand times!

Get The Look: Leighton’s Trendy Red-Orange Lipstick.

Love it or hate it, Leighton Meester’s right on trend wearing a semi-matte, deep-hued lipstick. As this Gossip Girl demonstrates, in order to pull off a so-bold-it-could-stop-traffic kind of color, it’s best to keep the rest of your makeup toned down as to not overwhelm the look.

So, is a sassy red-orange lipstick something you might want to duplicate for Fall 2008 and beyond? If so, follow these tips on how to keep such a saucy color saucy, along with some department and drugstore finds to boot:

• Apply lip liner in a shade similar to your lipstick. Outline, following the natural shape of your lips, and then fill in completely. By using liner as a base, your color will wear longer and bolder. It helps prevent color from bleeding, too.
• Using a lip brush, apply lipstick. Start in the center, working out as you go. Fix any harsh lines or mistakes with a Q-tip.
• Splurgey choice: Back at Fashion Rocks in September, Leighton told me she loves Yves Saint Laurent lipstick. Try Rouge Volupté Lipstick in Extreme Coral or Red Muse ($34).
