Beauty Mark It! Growing the Hair Out Gracefully

Beauty Mark It! Growing the Hair Out Gracefully.

We’ve all been there before — the dreaded “growing out the hair” plight. Perhaps you donated your tresses to an organization that helps women who have lost their own hair. Or maybe it’s all because you were sporting a stylish pixie or the trendy graduated bob, and now you’ve decided that it’s time to change it up a bit. Yep, been there.

Whatever your situation might entail, growing out your hair might not be so bad after all. In fact, I can’t think of a more perfect time to experiment with new braids, accessories, and products.

To kick off this week’s challenge, I’ll get you started with one of my favorite (and fast) hair styling must haves: the headband. This three-banded, colorful Forever 21 Rainbow Headband ($6.90) would surely brighten you up, especially during those extremely frustrating awkward hair days. Whether it be products, accessories, or even supplements, what items can you recommend to make the “it’s in that weird growing out” phase more graceful?

Share your choices by bookmarking items from around the web and tagging them with the phrase Growing It Out Gracefully. I’ll feature your favorites here next Tuesday.

Tarte = Berry Couture

Filed under: Beauty, Makeup — Tags: — admin @ 6:08 pm

Tarte = Berry Couture. Tarte Cosmetics has unveiled a new, limited edition stain set featuring all natural ingredients that are good for your skin. The Berry Couture set features a cheek stain and lip gloss/stain combo in berrylicious, a sheer, pinkish berry shade. I think the shade will flatter most skin tones since it is sheer and soft, and lends just right amount of flush to your cheeks. The cheek stain features natural mineral pigments and fruit extracts, and is preservative-free. It’s also super easy to use. I like just using my fingers to smooth and dab it on my cheeks. The lip stain was a bit too watery for me to use effectively, but the gloss on the other end was surprisingly great. It’s a natural, sheer pink tone and it is shiny and gives a plumping effect.

Tarte Berry Couture retails for $35 and is available at beauty.com. It’s a great set for adding a rosy glow to your face, and I definitely recommend checking it out!

The Hills Beauty Secrets: Lauren Conrad

The Hills Beauty Secrets: Lauren Conrad.

Lauren’s been through her share of drama in her feud with The Hills costar Heidi Montag, emerging troubles with Audrina Patridge and of course, her topsy turvy love life. Through all the ups and downs, one thing has remained consistent: Lauren’s flawless style. Here are her tips for staying beautiful when life hands you lemons and then airs those lemons on cable TV.

Lauren on hairstyles:

  • “My hair is everything-treated, so I use a deep conditioner from Unite once a week to repair the damage. I leave it on for ten minutes while I’m in the shower.”
  • “When I don’t have that much time to do my hair I use a beach spray. I spray throughout my hair right after I get out of the shower. Then I scrunch it and let it air dry to create messy waves.”
  • I like wearing scarves in my hair because they make me look put together without taking a lot of time. I mostly get them from vintage stores - I like simple patterns like polka dots.”

LC on eye makeup:

  • “The brush on On The Edge [Liquid Eyeliner by mark.] is really thin, so all you have to do is hold it there, and you just push it down against your lashes and drag it. I just close my eyes and drag it along, because if you stretch out your eye when you let go it goes thicker. You just do both eyes and the winging is just what you have to practice. And honestly I do a different size and shape every day; I just have to try to do one and then try to match it. I think it’s a little bit of muscle memory every day. You just have to get used to it, because now I can do it in my rearview mirror — but it took me a while to get it down.”
  • “Less is more. I think that when I started doing makeup, I would get so excited that I was allowed to wear it that I would match my blue eye shadow to my blue top every day and it would be too much. And my mom always said to me, take it down a little. Less is more with makeup.”
  • “I use my fingers to apply my under-eye concealer to my lids to even them out. I don’t like wearing eye shadow, but having a solid, matte color on my lids makes my eyes stand out and my liner look more dramatic.”
  • “If I had to choose one product to take with me to a desert island, it would be mark. Scanda-Lash Hook Up Mascara in black. It gives me really full lashes without any clumps.”

On her nails:

“I got into ridiculous colors. I just bought an electric blue, and then in Sephora they have press-on foils and it lasts just like nail polish. … I just got glitter, too, I found it in like a cheap party store. But if you layer it on it’s just solid glitter. Your nails look really cool. That’s a place where you can experiment.”

New York Fashion Week SP09 in Review

New York Fashion Week SP09 in Review.

Sorry ladies this is a little late. I had a summary of Fashion Week all done, and then it disappeared with everything else on my computer when it unexpectantly shut down.  It’s the worst when technology doesn’t work. Anyway…

Amidst all the Wall Street debacle and thoughts of the world imploding, at least the fashion set in New York is breathing a huge sigh of relief now that Fashion Week has now moved across the pond to London. Though I’ve been at the shows for a few seasons now, I have to say that SS09 was the most hectic and the most enjoyable one for me thus far.  The pic I threw up of standing literally 2 feet away from Carolina Herrera backstage only represents the tip of the excitement of seeing fashion, beauty, and glamour up close and personal.

This year, instead of covering every show, we took a different approach to summarize our favorite looks and delivering the trends to you daily.  This actually makes my recap much easier because you can just click here!

As far as personal highlights go, the shows are great but after a day of hard work running between the office and the tents, there’s nothing like an open bar and a glam crowd to get you excited for the next day.  Some of the better parties I attended were the Boucheron 150 Anniversary Bash, the MAC Fashion Week Dinner, and the Vogue/Rosa Cha afterparty (which I risked my life in the hurricane to go to).  It was just sad that by Wednesday, I was too overwhelmed and canceled the remainder of my parties. I imagine there were some fun ones closing out the week.

And of course, the opportunites to interview industry leaders from Bobbi Brown to Ted Gibson to James Aguiar.  What a week!  I’m still working on paying off all my sleep debt, but it was worth it.  ‘Til February!

Easy on the Eyes: A Simpler Way to Apply Shadow

Filed under: Beauty, Makeup — Tags: — admin @ 12:13 pm

Easy on the Eyes: A Simpler Way to Apply Shadow
Beauty comes in all different forms, and that goes for eye shapes as well. Depending on the shape of your eyes, you can use eye shadow to play up your features in different ways.

With your eyes open, gaze at those beautiful peepers. Do you see the eyelid or not? Take a look at the picture to the right. Notice that the eyes on the top row have little or no lid, while the ladies on the bottom section do have visible lids. If you fall into the first category, we’ll call you a contour. If you fall into the latter, you are a hooded beauty. To check out my instructions for an easy way to play up your eyes based on this principle, read more.

  • You’ll need two eye shadows. To make it simple, choose shades in the same color family, with one being two or three shades lighter for contrast. For tips on color selection based on your eye color, check out my Eyeshadow 101 series or pick neutral shades for a more natural look.
  • Lightly line upper and lower lashes with a pencil, lining top lashes from outer corner to about two-thirds of the way in, and lower lashes slightly about mid-way. Choose any color you’d like; to keep it simple, I recommend shades of black, brown, or gray, depending on shadow choice.
  • Apply the lighter eye shadow from the lashline to brow.
  • For contours: Apply the darker eyeshadow in the crease area (right around where the the upper part of your eyelid meets the lower part of your brow bone). This will create dimension and enhance the depth of your natural crease. For hooded: Apply the darker shadow from the lashline to just slightly past the upper area or your eyelid. Blend well where the light and dark colors meet. This will create a smoky effect and give the illusion of depth as well.
  • If you’d like, add an additional highlighting shade around the upper brow bone and inner corner of the eyes for an overall lightening effect. Blend out any harsh lines from the shadows and/or liner, and that’s it — you’re good to go!

Makeup Reviews: Anastasia Brow Pen

Filed under: Beauty, Makeup — Tags: — admin @ 12:05 pm

Makeup Reviews: Anastasia Brow Pen.

Ladies, I have found the impossible: a product for my eyebrows that I completely adore. Not one that I like. Not one that simply works well. No, this is a product I am wholly, deeply in love with.

Anastasia Beverly Hills is the reigning queen of eyebrow grooming - what an odd title! - but they’ve surpassed even themselves with their new Brow Pen. What is it? Simply, it’s a small marker-like pen with a flexible tip that fills in your eyebrows with soft, even, natural looking color in mere seconds.

This pen is available in only one color and describes this color as a “Universal Shade”. Normally, I consider this one step from product suicide. However, the tawny-brown looking tip delivered a flawlessly blended, natural color to my sparse, pale blonde brows with the greatest of ease. It lasts exactly the way makeup should, too; surviving my busy work day, the brow pen’s pigment doesn’t budge until it’s splashed with water - but then it’s toast.

Since getting the Brow Pen, I literally have not gone one day without using it. I can’t look at my eyebrows anymore without longing for the perfect definition and evenness this product delivers. Anastasia Beverly Hills, I am in love. With your pen.

The verdict: 10 out of 10!

Runway Beauty: Charlotte Ronson Fall 2008

Filed under: Beauty, Makeup — Tags: — admin @ 9:55 am

Runway Beauty: Charlotte Ronson Fall 2008.

Charlotte Ronson’s Fall 2008 runway offered a coquettish take on 1960s mod makeup inspired by Jane Birkin. Here’s how celebrity makeup artists Tina Turnbow and Sarah Lucero used Stila Cosmetics to create the show’s look:

Face:
The makeup artists kept the look fresh by prepping skin with Stila Sheer Tinted Moisturizer. Imperfections were hidden by the light reflecting Illuminating Concealer. A light dusting of Sheer Pressed Powder reduced shine.

Blush:
A touch of Stila Convertible Color in Petunia created sweetly flushed cheeks. Models got a splash of faux freckles on their noses and the tops of cheeks; to try this at home, dip a skinny brush into a brown Smudge Pot and let dry.

Eyes:
Lucero used the Kajal Eye Liner in Smokey Quartz just underneath the brow bone at the top of the crease where one would normally put shadow. She smudged and blended the line to soften the look, and then dusted Chinois Eye Shadow($18), a matte off-white, over the entire lid. In a nod to mod makeup, lower lids were lined with a black gel Smudge Pot and tiny lower lashes were painted onto the models’ skin just at the lash line. The models’ actual lashes were coated with Major Lash Mascara in black.

Lips:
Finally, for the lips, there were two options: Convertible Color in Fuchsia or SPF 20 Lipstick in Charlotte, which might look a little bright in the tube, but creates a lovely lip that’s simply irresistible.

Hair Trends Spring 2009

Hair Trends Spring 2009.

Inspiration:

Inspired by a spring day in Paris, Catherine Malandrino’s collection reflects the ’40s and ’50s soft silhouettes that were feminine with an underlying edge.

The Look
:

Elaborating on the 40s/50s era, the hairstyles evoke “rockabilly” flair by creating volume on the top of the head in a chignon and similar variations of this updo.

The Hair Color Story:

The hair was augmented with customized Wella colored extensions in order to create beautiful chignons that match and complement the natural hair color. Eva Scrivo and her team of Wella Professionals colorists colored over 20 extensions in preparation, along with 30 accentuating pieces to match. In order to create depth, dimension and texture, the Wella Professionals team colored the extensions to show movement and the blending of light and dark tones.

Step-by-Step:

1) Make a tight ponytail high on the top of the head

2) Twist the ponytail tightly into a coil

3) Wrap coiled ponytail first towards the forehead and then to the back, securing with pins into a bun, sitting high on the head

4) Take a Wella highlighted extension, coil, and secure on top of the twisted and already secured ponytail to add height and dimension to the bun

chanel haute chocolat

chanel haute chocolat.

#fullpost {display:none;}If you are looking for something to completely sell out in like 5 seconds…look no further than Chanel’s new nail colour offering Haute Chocolat ($20)

For one, so loving the name.

Second, its color is described as a chic brown with shimmery golden flecks…they had us at shimmery.

Lastly, the name was chosen in a contest that Seventeen magazine and Chanel ingeniously ran last year.

Seventeen readers were given the challenge to come up with a name and the inspiration behind it.

The winning name and inspiration was conceived by 19 year old Amy Gonzo.

In her own words, here’s how she came up with the idea:

I gathered ideas for the Seventeen nail contest from my own memories of the holidays. I wanted to combine the comfort and warmth of the season with the chic elegance that is indicative of Chanel.

How amazing is that?

Amy will be officially announced as the winner in the October 2008 issue of Seventeen (which hit newsstands September 16th).

Haute Chocolat, unfortunately, will not be at counters and online (at chanel.com) until October.

So mark those calendars and get your friendly neighborhood sales associate on speed dial darlings
